# Does Medicare or Medicaid Cover Senior Moving Services? What Families Should Know
One of the most common questions we hear from families: "Will Medicare pay for Mom’s move?" The short answer is no — but there are programs and benefits that can offset costs. Here is a clear breakdown.
## Medicare: No Coverage for Moving Services
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover moving expenses, downsizing help, or relocation services. Medicare is designed for medical care — hospital stays, doctor visits, and medically necessary equipment. Moving a household, even when medically motivated, falls outside its scope.
**Medicare Advantage (Part C)** plans sometimes offer supplemental benefits like transportation to medical appointments, but these do not extend to residential moves.
## Medicaid: Limited and State-Dependent
Virginia Medicaid may cover certain transition-related costs if the senior is moving into a Medicaid-funded facility. Under the **Money Follows the Person (MFP)** program, some states provide one-time transition funds for individuals moving from nursing facilities back into community settings. Virginia participates in this program, and eligible individuals may receive help with:
- Security deposits
- Essential household furnishings
- Utility connection fees
However, Medicaid does not directly pay for professional moving labor or senior move management.
## VA Benefits for Veterans
Veterans and surviving spouses may be eligible for the **Aid and Attendance** benefit through the VA, which provides a monthly pension supplement for those who need assistance with daily living. While Aid and Attendance funds are not earmarked for moving, they can be used at the veteran’s discretion — including to offset moving costs.
The 2026 monthly rates:
- **Single veteran:** up to $2,229/month
- **Veteran with spouse:** up to $2,642/month
- **Surviving spouse:** up to $1,432/month
Contact your local VA Regional Office or a Veterans Service Organization to determine eligibility.
## Long-Term Care Insurance
If your parent purchased long-term care insurance years ago, review the policy carefully. Some policies include a **home modification or transition benefit** that covers costs associated with moving to a care facility, including:
- Professional packing and moving
- Home modifications at the new residence
- Care coordination during transition
Benefit amounts and qualifying events vary widely by policy. Call the insurer and ask specifically about "transition benefits" or "facility move-in benefits."
## How Families Typically Pay for Senior Moves
In our experience, families cover senior moving costs through a combination of:
1. **The senior’s savings or home sale proceeds.** Selling the family home typically generates funds that more than cover the transition.
2. **Family contributions.** Adult children often split costs.
3. **Estate sale revenue.** Professional estate sales can generate $2,000–$15,000 depending on the household.
4. **Tax deductions.** Moving expenses for medical reasons may be deductible. Consult a tax advisor.
